Andrew Jackson Academy seeks to provide an opportunity for students to reach their highest potential mentally, physically, as well as socially and morally, in preparation for college and for life. We exist for the child, to help him develop an image for himself which motivates him to care and try to seek accomplishment. Each child, therefore, should be regarded as in individual who deserves consideration, respect, understanding, encouragement, and qualified instructions.
We believe that basic skills, desirable habits, and independent thinking are essentials of education. We strive to help students to acquire these essentials and to instill the realization that learning is understanding, and that understanding is the key to a meaningful life in this era of unprecedented universal advances.
With focus upon the individual as part of a group, we believe that each child should be taught to appreciate and to practice justice, fair play, truth, honor and duty. Our aim is to give them a greater appreciation of American heritage of freedom under law, justice, free enterprise and the spiritual foundations of this country.
We feel that the school should strive to develop a feeling for beauty in the everyday world of the student through participation in fine arts and varied enrichments. Through these efforts the Academy hopes to make a great contribution to the future leadership of our community, state, and nation.
Andrew Jackson Academy’s mission is to prepare our students for post-secondary education with opportunities for those who do not plan to attend college. Students who do not plan to attend college will have the option to take courses required for the general diploma. All other students will take college prep courses.
The A-Beka curriculum is the curriculum used in grades K-6. This is a Christian based program. The curriculum in the elementary school at Andrew Jackson consists of the basic skills using the texts as guides. The basic skills are expanded and elevated in the high school to ensure that the student has been taught what is needed/required to attend and be successful in a post- secondary school including four-year colleges and universities. A general diploma curriculum is available for those students uninterested in pursuing a college degree.
A school is only as good as its teachers and staff. We have a good cadre of teachers who meet the requirements of the South Carolina Independent School Association. (SCISA) Most of our teachers are certified by S.C. Department of Education with several having advanced degrees. The teachers are dedicated and take a real interest in each child.
We have an outstanding sports program. Usually, our teams are competitive in all sports. The sports program includes football, basketball and baseball for the boys while the girls have opportunities in cheerleading, basketball, softball and volleyball. All are encouraged to participate.
The school week consists of four days Monday through Thursday. The school day officially begins at 7:55 and ends at 3:05.
We are governed by a Board of Directors whose responsibility is to make policy and ensure the well-being of Andrew Jackson. This includes every area from sports to the fiscal.
The Board of Directors consists of six members who serve three-year terms. Each community elects a board member from their community who has to be approved by the other board members. Vacancies occurring in the Board of Directors from death, resignation, or removal shall be filled by the community electing a new board member. A board member is no longer eligible to serve on the board after the child/children graduate.
We are involved with standardized testing. Andrew Jackson follows the testing program recommended by SCISA. The Stanford Achievement Test is given each spring to student in grades K5-8. The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test is administered each spring to student in grades 1-8. Students in the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades are given the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test in October (PSAT). The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and ACT are taken by members of the eleventh and twelfth grades. The Act Assets Skills Assessment and the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) tests are given each spring to the juniors and seniors.
Test results are used to interpret individual student performance based on ability and past performance. These tests are most helpful in determining the areas that the students require additional help. The results are also used to identify the areas of strength and weakness of our curriculum and allow us to make adjustments.
Discipline is so important in a school setting. At the beginning of each school year, students of Andrew Jackson are informed of the type of behavior expected of them by means of the student handbook. A tear out sheet is signed by the parent and student and returned to the school verifying that the handbook has been read. In school suspension is held as needed for students who are guilty of minor acts of misconduct. Discipline regulations are outlined in the “Student Handbook” and are enforced by teachers and the Head of School. The Head of School assumes the responsibility of discipline at all times in and around the Academy and takes corrective action according to the nature of seriousness.
