We are engaged in learning Phonics, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Science and Social Studies. We also have a Bible story each day. To know what your child is doing, follow along on their worksheets. I mark anything that is wrong and then have the child correct it. If you follow closely you will know what we are doing in class.
Homework: You will find a homework sheet in their folders each week. Please initial that homework has been completed. Follow closely to find out when a test will be given.
Reading: Please emphasize EXPRESSION when your child is reading. They also need to read smoothly and we are learning to “read like we talk.” Cursive Writing: First graders are taught to write neatly in cursive. Creative Writing: Students are learning to write creatively using collected information to write about topics of interest such as dolphins, whales and historical people. Arithmetic: Students are learning addition and subtraction concepts up to the 11 family; adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers; concepts of telling time; counting money; counting by 2's, 5's, 10's from any number, 3's; story problems; place value; adding 4 and 5 number combinations. Phonics and Language: Learning phonetic sounds to help them read. Students are learning syllables, root words, suffixes, prefixes, writing sentences with capital letters and ending with correct punctuation.
